African Textiles Workshop Successful Fundraiser
HandUp Congo’s Crafting with African Fabric workshop was held at the BORONIA UNITING CHURCH HALL 29 April 2021.
We raised more than $700 for the Lotumbe sewing school, which will go a very long way in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The single mums enrolled in the training need fabric, sewing machines, needles and much more. A few are polio survivors, and after training have been able to establish micro sewing businesses in the back of their mobility chairs.
All supplies must be brought by dugout canoe from the provincial capital, 300 km away.
Below is a photo of two sewing students, who make do without electricity and ergonomic chairs – they have their lessons in the village church, using pews as tables.
Thank you to Petra and Terri for sharing their skills, and to Boronia Uniting Church for providing the great venue! Special thanks to a few women who funded tickets for others.
